District Council Meeting - April 2 & 3, 2009 - Mobile, Alabama
The Southeastern States District Council held its' quarterly Business Managers' Meeting in Mobile Alabama. All Local Unions were represented and reported on the work situation in their jurisdiction. Although there is a current lull in employment in many Locals, they feel confident, as do their contractors, that the situation will improve due to the stimulus monies from the Obama administration along with an increase in energy related construction. The meeting was also attended by several contractors and the three general officers of the Iron Workers International Union. General President Joseph Hunt, General Secretary Walter Wise and General Treasurer Edward McHugh all addressed the Local Union delegates and stated that they were impressed by their hard work and dedication that resulted in a 22% gain in membership since 2003. The General officers also toured a steel mill under construction and a coal fueled power facility.

20th Annual Outstanding Apprentice of the Year Competition - June 9-11, 2009
Local union No. 597 is the proud host of this year's event which will culminate with a Banquet and awards presentation Thursday night June 11th.
