Press Release Iron Workers Union Announces Expansion in the Carolinas in Response to Industry Manpower Demands. With the support of the Iron Workers International Union, IMPACT (Ironworker Management Progressive Action Trust) and the Ironworking Industry Local 848 is meeting the manpower challenges in the Carolinas.
Charleston, SC, February 15, 2007: Carolina Iron Workers Local Union Number 848, a newly chartered Local of the Iron Workers International Union is launching its plan for the Carolinas. Local 848 covers the booming construction economies of North and South Carolina and is charged with recruiting and training skilled ironworker craftspeople to be employed by contractors who are signatory with the Iron Workers Union. These positions are high-paying jobs with health cares and pension benefits. Local 848 has a State and Federally approved Apprenticeship program that offers a path to these jobs in a profession that has a great future not only in the Carolinas, but in the United States as a whole. Studies from many industry groups, including the South Eastern Manpower Tripartite Alliance have projected a sizable shortfall of skilled construction craftspeople and Local 848 believes it has the answer. David Gornewicz, Administrator of Local 848 says “the challenge of the manpower shortage is here and we are instituting programs to address it in new and creative ways”. “We are increasing our staff and expanding our facilities aided by our International Union, IMPACT and our employers to meet the challenge.” “Recruiters are on the ground, new facilities are being opened in Greenville, SC, Durham, NC and soon in Charlotte, NC.” Local 848 is also expanding its Apprenticeship program in creative ways to train new ironworkers. “The launching of our distance training aspect (iwt.cc) has provided new opportunities to young people who want to be a part of our Apprenticeship Program”, says Tom Graff, Training Director for Local 848. “Our plan is to have multiple mobile training materials available to go where the training is needed.” “The first will be a portable welder certification trailer.” Local 848 is looking forward to working with the diverse communities in the Carolinas and for the opportunity to offer employment opportunities to ironworkers who do not currently belong to the Iron Workers Union. For information please contact David Gornewicz or Tom Graff at the phone numbers listed above. |
